An Introduction to Botox: What is it and Does it Work?

You’ve probably heard of Botox, but you may not know exactly what it is or how it works. Botox is a popular cosmetic treatment that can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. If you’re considering getting botox, you’re not alone—nearly 7 million Americans received botox injections in 2019. But what exactly is botox, and does it really work? Let’s take a closer look.

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable medication made from botulinum toxin, a protein that temporarily paralyzes muscles. When injected into facial muscles, Botox relaxes them, which reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines caused by muscle contractions. For example, if you have wrinkles between your eyebrows (often called “11s”), it’s likely because the muscles in that area are contracting too much. A few minor injections of Botox can help relax those muscles, resulting in smoother skin.

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

Most people see results within a few days after treatment. However, it can take up to two weeks for the full effect to be seen. Results typically last for four to six months before touch-ups are needed.

Is Botox Safe?

Botox has been used for over 20 years for cosmetic and medical purposes with very few side effects. That said, as with any medication, there is always a small risk of side effects such as bruising, redness, or swelling at the injection site. Be sure to consult with a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon who has experience with cosmetic injectables to minimize your risk of side effects.
